Sergeant First Class Robert H. Deeks, Jr., of Littleton, Colorado, died on 3 March 1993 while supporting Operation RESTORE HOPE in Somalia.
Deeks initially enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman in 1975. Following a break in service, he reenlisted in 1982 as a 67N Medium Helicopter Repairer, serving in the Aviation Brigade, 6th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He completed the Ranger Course in 1988 and reclassified as a Medical Specialist (91A) the following year. He attended the Special Operations Medical Sergeant Course in 1989 and was awarded the Special Forces Tab in 1990. Later that year, he deployed with 5th Special Forces Group to Saudi Arabia to support Operation DESERT SHIELD.
SFC Deeks was mortally wounded after the vehicle he was driving triggered a landmine enroute to Ballem Balle, Somalia. He was serving as a Senior Medical Sergeant in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, at the time of his death.
