A Tennessee native, Sergeant First Class William M. Bennett was killed in action on 12 September 2003 near the town of Ar-Ramadi, Iraq.
Bennett enlisted in the Army as an Engineer in 1986 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After completing Army Diver training at Panama City, Florida, he joined the 7th Engineer Detachment, Fort Kobbe, Panama, during Operation JUST CAUSE. Following service in Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM, he volunteered for the Special Forces Qualification Course. On graduating in 1995 he was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
SFC Bennett was assigned as a Medical Sergeant in 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM at the time of his death.
