A native of Albany, Georgia, Staff Sergeant Robert S. Goodwin was killed in action on 20 September 2004 during a combat patrol in Paktika Province, Afghanistan.
Goodwin enlisted in the Army as a Medical Specialist in March 1989. After completing Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and the Basic Airborne Course, he was assigned to the 44th Medical Brigade, Fort Benning, Georgia. Following a deployment to Operation DESERT STORM, he retrained as an Infantryman. In late 2003 he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
SSG Goodwin was serving as a Weapons Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group and was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
