A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Master Sergeant Kelly L. Hornbeck died on 18 January 2004 from wounds received in action on a patrol near Baghdad, Iraq.
Hornbeck enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1987 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Following his assignment to the 3rd Infantry Regiment, Fort Myer, Virginia, he volunteered for Special Forces. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and served with both the 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado.
MSG Hornbeck was assigned as a Team Sergeant in 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM at the time of his death.
