A native of Leesville, Louisiana, Sergeant First Class Robert J. Mogensen was killed on 29 May 2004 by an improvised explosive device during a combat patrol near Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Mogensen enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1995. After completing his Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2000 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg.
SFC Mogensen was assigned as a Senior Weapons Sergeant in 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, and was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
