A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Staff Sergeant Michael G. Owen died 15 October 2004 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Karabilah, Iraq.
Owen enlisted in the Army in 1992 as an Automated Logistics Specialist and retrained as a Psychological Operations Specialist in 2002. He was assigned to 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and deployed to Haiti in March 2004.
SSG Owen was serving as team leader of a three-man tactical Psychological Operations team during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM when he died.
