A resident of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Staff Sergeant Kyu H. Chay died on 28 October 2006 in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Chay enlisted in 2001 as a Cryptologic Linguist. He was assigned to 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before transferring to the 3rd Special Forces Group in 2006.

SSG Chay was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when he was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his combat patrol.
