A native of San Antonio, Texas, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel E. Holland died on 18 May 2006 in Baghdad, Iraq.

In 1988, Holland was commissioned through the ROTC Program in the Veterinary Corps after earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University. Among his assignments, he commanded the South Plains District Veterinary Command, Fort Hood, Texas.

LTC Holland was assigned to the 352nd Civil Affairs Command, Fort Meade, Maryland, when he was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle while supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
