A native of Alameda, California, Sergeant First Class Merideth L. Howard died on 8 September 2006 in Kabul, Afghanistan while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Howard enlisted as a Medical Repair Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1988 and served until 1994. She was recalled to active duty in 2005, completed the Mobilized Civil Affairs Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and deployed in the spring of 2006.
SFC Howard was assigned to 405th Civil Affairs Battalion, Pleasant Grove, Utah, when she was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near her vehicle.
