A native of The Dalles, Oregon, Staff Sergeant Robert J. Paul died on 8 September 2006 in Kabul, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1997, two years after earning a Master’s Degree in Community Planning and Economic Development from the University of Maryland. He completed Psychological Operations training and six years later the Civil Affairs Reclassification Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
SSG Paul was assigned to the 351st Civil Affairs Command, Mountain View, California, when he was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle.
