Born in Mexico, First Sergeant Carlos N. Saenz died 5 May 2006, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device near Al Hillah, Iraq.
Saenz enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1978 and joined 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. At the completion of his enlistment he entered the Individual Ready Reserve and served in Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM.
1SG Saenz completed the Civil Affairs Qualification Course and in 2005 was ordered to active duty with 490th Civil Affairs Battalion, Abilene, Texas. He served there until his death in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
