A native of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Captain Richard G. Cliff, Jr. was killed on 29 September 2008 in Yakchal, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, by an improvised explosive device.
Cliff was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in June 2002 after graduating from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. His first assignment was with 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. He served two tours in Iraq before graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in July 2008.
CPT Cliff was serving as a Detachment Commander in 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
