Born in Hawaii but raised in San Diego, California, Sergeant James M. Treber died on 29 June 2008 in a vehicle accident in Khosrow-E Sofla, Afghanistan.
Treber joined the U.S. Merchant Marine in 2002. He enlisted in the Army in October 2005 as a Special Forces Candidate and completed Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2007 and was assigned to 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
SGT Treber was serving as a Weapons Sergeant with 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at the time of his death. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
