A longtime resident of Natchez, Mississippi, Sergeant First Class Christopher D. Shaw was killed on 29 September 2009 on Jolo Island, Philippines, by an improvised explosive device.
Shaw enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve while attending Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. In May 1995, he came on active duty as an Artillery Forward Observer assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in March 1999 and joined the 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington. He later served as a Special Forces instructor at Camp Mackall, North Carolina.
SFC Shaw was serving with 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group when he was killed during his second deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES.
