Staff Sergeant Rusty H. Christian, of Greenville, Tennessee, was killed by an improvised explosive device during a patrol on 28 January 2010 in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Christian enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in February 2004 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Lewis, Washington. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in August 2009 and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington.
SSG Christian was serving as an Engineer Sergeant with 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group when he was killed.
