A native of Tucson, Arizona, Sergeant Martin A. Lugo died 19 August 2010, when he was struck by enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Logar Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Lugo enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in September 2004. He served for six years with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.

SGT Lugo graduated from the Ranger Indoctrination Program in April 2005 and was assigned as an ammunition handler, automatic rifleman, team leader and squad leader in 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served until his death.
