A native of Red Bay, Alabama, Captain Waid C. Ramsey died on 4 August 2011 of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit conducted combat operations in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

A graduate of Athens State University, Ramsey accepted a commission in the Alabama Army National Guard in 2000. He served as a Detachment Commander in 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Fort Payne, Alabama.

CPT Ramsey was serving as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment Commander of the 20th Special Forces Group at the time of his death.
