A native of Orange, New Jersey, Master Sergeant George A. Bannar, Jr. died 20 August 2013, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Bannar enlisted in the Army as a Medical Specialist in October 1996. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
MSG Bannar graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in July 2003 and was assigned as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was serving at the time of his death.
