A native of Bartlett, Tennessee, Staff Sergeant Stephen M. New died 28 July 2013, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Kabul Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
New enlisted in the Army in August 2003 as a Health Care Specialist. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he was assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia.
SSG New graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in November 2010 and was assigned as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant to 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Birmingham, Alabama. He was mobilized in April 2013 and was serving with 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, at the time of his death.
