A native of Butler, Georgia, Staff Sergeant Jason A. McDonald died 9 June 2014, of wounds sustained while his unit was conducting combat operations in Zabul Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

McDonald enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 2004. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

SSG McDonald graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2010 and was assigned as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant to 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served until his death.
