A native of Bristol, Rhode Island, First Sergeant Peter A. McKenna, Jr. died 7 August 2015, of wounds received from small arms fire, when his unit was attacked at Camp Integrity in Kabul, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.
McKenna enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in July 1998. He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York.
1SG McKenna graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2002 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant. He was the 1SG of Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan at the time of his death.
