Born in Kirksville, Missouri, Sergeant First Class Matthew C. Lewellen was killed in Jordan on 4 November 2016 by small arms fire while supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

Lewellen enlisted in the Army in February 2010 as a Special Forces Candidate. After completing Infantry One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant in November 2012. He was then assigned to 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, serving in both 3rd and 4th Battalions. He had a previous deployment to Afghanistan.

SFC Lewellen was conducting a Special Forces training mission in Jordan at the time of his death.
