Sergeant First Class Jeremiah W. Johnson of Springboro, Ohio, was killed while conducting a reconnaissance patrol near Tongo Tongo, Niger, on 4 October 2017.
Johnson enlisted in the Army in October 2007 as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist. After training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he served in Chemical units at Fort Hood, Texas, and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, deploying to Jordan in 2012. After Airborne training in 2014, he served in 9th and 5th Psychological Operations Battalions, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Johnson was then assigned to 14th Chemical Detachment, General Support Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2015.
SFC Johnson was an assistant team leader in the 14th Chemical Detachment when he was killed by enemy gunfire during contingency operations.
