A native of Palm Beach Garden, Florida, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan R. Farmer died on 16 January 2019 from wounds sustained while conducting a key leader engagement meeting in Manbij, Syria.
Farmer enlisted in the Army as a Special Forces Candidate in 2005. He completed Infantry One Station Unit Training and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, before graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2007 as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. Farmer was then assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Following completion of the Special Forces Warrant Officer Course in 2016, he returned to his former unit to serve as an Assistant Operational Detachment – Alpha Commander. Farmer deployed nine times over a span of ten years to Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria.
CW2 Farmer was supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE with his detachment when he was fatally wounded by an enemy suicide bomber.
