Prior to the start of World War II, Captain John H. McGee established a reputation for developing training and employment concepts for indigenous troops at Camp Pettit and the Zamboanga Training Center on Mindanao in the Philippine Islands.
Captured in 1942, McGee escaped in 1944 and successfully evaded recapture until he was evacuated by the American submarine, USS Narwhal in September 1944.
Ordered to Eighth U. S. Army (EUSA) Headquarters in Korea in July 1950, Lieutenant Colonel McGee prepared the initial plan for conducting guerrilla operations in North Korea which was followed by his creation of the Eighth Army Ranger Company on “Ranger Hill” at Kijang and the establishment of the United Nations Reception Center for allied forces at Taegu.
In 1951, Colonel McGee became the Director, EUSA, G-3 Miscellaneous Division (8240th Army Unit) responsible to organizing and conducting guerrilla operations in North Korea form forward operational bases in Eastern, Central and Northern North Korea.
