What is the difference between Special Forces and Special Operations Forces?
Special Forces is a specific branch of the U.S. Army with a clearly defined set of missions. It is unique to the U.S. Army. Special Operations Forces (SOF) is a broader, Joint term that, in the Army, encompasses Special Forces, Psychological Operations, Civil Affairs, Rangers, Special Operations Aviation, and Special Operations Support/Sustainment. It can also be applied to U.S. Army legacy units from previous eras and conflicts that performed specialized missions but are no longer active, such as the World War II-era Alamo Scouts or Korean War-era GHQ Raiders.
