A native of Coral Springs, Florida, Warrant Officer 1 Joseph L. Schiro died 6 October 2012, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Schiro enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in June 2004. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
WO1 Schiro graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in March 2008 and was assigned as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Schiro then graduated from the Special Forces Warrant Officer Course in May 2011 and returned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, where he served until his death.
